Email lifecycle
The statuses and events an email goes through, from accepted to delivered or bounced.
When the API accepts an email it returns an id right away; sending happens in the background within seconds. Delivery results arrive from the receiving mail server and are recorded as events. The API returns the latest one as last_event; the dashboard shows the full timeline per recipient.
Statuses
| last_event | Meaning |
|---|---|
queued | Accepted and waiting to be sent. |
scheduled | Accepted with scheduled_at in the future. Can be rescheduled or canceled. |
sending | Being handed to the mail infrastructure. Usually lasts under a second. |
sent | Handed to the mail infrastructure, which will now deliver it. |
delivered | The recipient’s mail server accepted the email. |
delivery_delayed | Delivery is being retried, for example because the mailbox is full. |
bounced | The recipient’s server rejected the email. |
complained | The recipient marked the email as spam. |
failed | The email could not be sent. The dashboard shows the reason. |
suppressed | Not sent: every recipient is on the suppression list. |
canceled | Canceled before it was sent. |
An email with several recipients has one status: it only moves forward (for example a later delivery_delayed never replaces delivered), while last_event is always the most recent event.
delivered means the receiving server accepted the email, not that it reached the inbox rather than the spam folder; no sender can see that.
Before sending
Just before sending, Cresca checks again that:
- your account is active;
- the sender and its domain are still active (a paused domain fails the email instead of sending it);
- no recipient was suppressed since the request (those recipients are skipped).
If the provider is briefly unavailable, Cresca retries automatically with backoff. You do not need to resend.
Allowance
Each recipient counts as one email toward your plan's monthly allowance, shared with campaigns. Suppressed recipients, canceled emails and emails that fail before sending do not count. See Rate limits and quotas.
Retention
Emails and their events are kept for 30 days, then deleted. Attachment contents are deleted as soon as the email is sent.
